Sorry, but I’m unfollowing you

Last week I posted about how I needed to get back on track with my targets for this year, posting and tweeting to be specific. So I started hitting my twitter apps on my iPhone, doing some check-ins and reviewing my twitter feed.

So far it’s been going pretty well, I’ve managed to increase my frequency back up to at least a tweet a day and redeveloping the habit I tried to establish at the beginning of the year. I also have to admit there’s a fair amount of “noise” in my stream and I need to do something about it.

Over the next few days I’m going to be carving out some time to “clean the stream” which mean that I will be unfollowing a number of folks. Please don’t take this the wrong way, I’m not doing this out of spite but out of a need to be able to actually make sense of my stream and gain some value from it. I’m also not going to declare “twitter bankruptcy” and just unfollow everyone as there are a number of individuals in my stream that I want to continue to follow. I’ll be evaluating everyone I’m following before I hit the unfollow button.

How do you make the cut? Here’s some of my criteria, in no particular order:

1. Be active

I’ve already begun this part of the cleaning process, if you don’t tweet why follow you? There are some exceptions to this rule, the school system, organizations and online services for example.

2. Tweet something other than just affiliate links

I love it when folks share things but if your entire stream is just a series of links that all lead to your latest affiliate program sorry but your fishing the wrong stream. I’m not saying if I see an affiliate link here and there I’ll unfollow you, only if the bulk of your tweets are that way.

Word of warning – don’t DM me with an affiliate link, I’ll unfollow you immediately. ┬áSee my Twitter Policy.

3. Respond if I DM you

I don’t often DM folks but if I do getting a response is cool and I appreciate it. I try to do this the best I can but sometimes you just can’t and I also understand that too. If you do respond, your stock goes up in my book.

4. Keep it clean

Most folks do this already but I felt it important to include it. I understand that folks should be able to express themselves in any manner they feel appropriate but as I often have folks look over my shoulder (including my kids) so keep it clean and I’m more apt to continue following you.

5. Tweet about things I’m interested in

I saved this one for last as when I took a quick scan of my stream earlier I think this is the one that most will trip on. When I first started using twitter I followed everyone and their brother trying to build a following (I follow you, you follow me) which helped build my initial following and has also helped create my current stream challenge. So if you don’t tweet about a topic I’m interested in out you go.

Once again, if I unfollow you keep in mind I’m not doing this out of spite but out of need and if for some reason you feel compelled to stop following me I understand that as well.

After I’m finished with this pass I’m going to let the dust settle and then determine if I need to do anything further to “clean the stream” or if I just continue on and let my Twitter Policy (which will also be reviewed and updated if needed) be my guide.

Do you “clean the stream” or just let it flow? Please share in the comments.

And then there were three

Three Twitter streams that is.

This past week I decided that I needed to break up my Twitter activity, not because I tweet a lot but because I felt that by separating certain things folks could follow the accounts they want to get the information they want.

Thus, I now have three Twitter accounts which are:

@scotnewbury – this is my main account. If you’re okay getting tidbits about my life, what I’m up to, or items I’m reading this is the account to follow. Please kept in mind that that this account is not centered around any given subject matter so you’ll never know what’s coming. You will hear about the posts on my blogs but it won’t necessarily be the moment they go live, so please keep that in mind.

@newburyonline – this account is for this blog. If you’d like to know when a new post goes up or when something specific happens regarding this blog – this is the account you want.

@ofdicendragons – this account is for my blog, of Dice and Dragons, centered around role-playing games. If you want to keep up on what’s going on with that blog then this is the account for you.

I hope this makes life a little easier for everyone, now you can follow the Twitter feed that best suits you.

If you think I’m nuts to do this or if you think this is a great idea please sound off in the comments.

My Twitter Policy

Twitter can be a great tool and it can also be a huge waste of time so in order to keep me from following into the latter category I felt it would be a good idea to let everyone know what guidlines I going to be using going forward.

1. I’m not following everyone back.

I know that there are those out there that feel it is proper to follow someone who follows you but let’s be honest, you just can’t as the volume will get to be too much. If you decide to follow me that’s great, I’ll stop by your profile page and check out what you’re tweeting and if it’s interesting to me I might follow back. Please don’t take this personally, I just can’t be friends with everyone.

Right now I have over 500 folks I’m following and it’s already too much, there’s just no engagment from most. So yes, there’s a purge coming and again, it’s not personal, just a fact of life – you can only filter so much.

2. I tweet about everything

Some tweet about work, some about what they’re selling, some about family – me, I tweet about everything. So please keep that in mind when you follow me. I’m on Gowalla so you’ll get tweets from that, I mention what’s going on with the kids, at work, gaming, and whatever might be going on at the time.

Yes, my twitter account is personal and I use it that way.

3. Don’t pitch me with a Direct Message

I’ll say it again, don’t pitch me with a direct message – I’ll unfollow you immediately. I do on occasion send out a pitch for something but I do so on a broadcast (everyone gets it), I won’t direct message them to you so please don’t do it to me.

That’s all for now, I’m sure that I’ll be editing it and adding to it as time goes along so I will be moving this to a separate page and will let everyone know when there’s a change to it.

So, do you have a Twitter policy? Why not post a link to it below?

What I’ve been reading – April 24th 2010 edition

So it’s been a couple of weeks since I last posted but I’ve still been taking pictures and sharing out articles.

Below are some of the articles I’ve read over the last couple of weeks – enjoy!

Get Your Tweets via RSS

Admit it, you’re on twitter quite a bit during the day (okay, during the night too). I’m also willing to bet that you have more than a few folks you like to follow but unless you’re online when they are you’re probably missing out on what they’re tweeting about – it’s time to stop missing those tweets by using the twitter’s RSS feed.

twitter-rss-feedNow most folks are familiar with using RSS to follow their favorite blog but what most folks miss is the RSS feed button right below the pictures of all the folks that person is following.

All you need to do is click on that little orange icon to add that twitter’s tweets to your RSS reader of choice.

Once you’ve done that you won’t have to worry about missing out on something they’d tweeted about, even when you’re not logged in yourself.

For those that are worried about productivity by adding these RSS feeds to your reader you can effectively follow along without feeling the need to tweet back right away, retweet something or get caught up in reading the ‘all friends’ stream (and you know you do).

Do you use RSS feeds to follow your favorite twitters? Post in the comments and share.
